Mahakan Fort community is a small community of approximately 300 people residing next to Mahakan Fort, between the old city wall and the canal in central Bangkok. However, in 1959 the Bangkok government initiated a plan to develop and improve landscape of the Rattanakosin island to be like the era of King Rama 5, which means reducing the population in the neighborhood and increasing the green field. In January 2003, the residents were served with an eviction notice by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), and were offered relocation to a place 45 kilometres away, on the outskirt of Bangkok. Thus began a long battle by the residents to retain their rights to the land. Some residents chose to move away but a core group of about 150 have remained, along with their teak houses which are examples of early Rattanakosin-era architecture.
